Terms of Service
The short version: Backlot is a media player you buy once. It plays files you already own or stream from a Plex server you already run. We don't host, sell or provide any video.
1. Who we are
Backlot is made and sold by Lost & Found Media ("we", "us"). You can reach us at thomas@lostnfoundmedia.com. Payments are processed by our merchant of record, Paddle.com Market Ltd, which handles checkout, sales tax and receipts. Paddle's own terms apply to the transaction itself.
2. What you're buying
Backlot for Mac is free to download and use with local folders. Plex streaming is free for a 7-day trial, after which it requires a one-time licence. The licence unlocks Plex streaming on the Macs you personally use, for the current major version of Backlot, including all updates to that version. It is not a subscription and does not renew.
Backlot for Apple TV is distributed separately through Apple's TestFlight and App Store, and Apple's terms govern that copy.
3. Licence
We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to install and use Backlot on devices you own or control. You may not resell, share or publish your licence key, reverse-engineer the licensing, or use Backlot to infringe anyone's copyright. One key is for one person's household; businesses should contact us.
Backlot includes open-source components (mpv, FFmpeg and MPVKit) under the LGPL. Their licence texts ship in the app under Settings ▸ About, and nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licences.
4. Your content and your Plex server
Backlot plays media from folders on your Mac and from Plex servers you sign into. You are responsible for having the right to play that content. Backlot is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Plex, Inc., and we can't control changes Plex makes to its service or APIs. If Plex changes in a way that breaks a feature, we'll do our best to update Backlot, but we can't guarantee any third-party service keeps working.
5. Updates and support
Backlot checks for updates and can install them in place. Updates are provided as-is and may change or remove features. Support is by email at thomas@lostnfoundmedia.com; we answer as quickly as a small team can.
6. Refunds
See our Refund Policy. In short: 14 days, no questions asked.
7. Disclaimer and liability
Backlot is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential damages, and our total liability to you for anything arising from Backlot is limited to the amount you paid for your licence. Nothing in these terms removes rights you have as a consumer that can't be waived.
8. Changes
We may update these terms. If we make a material change we'll note the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Backlot after a change means you accept the updated terms.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
